VW Super Bugger: a VW Bug with camper

In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about the iconic Super Bugger, a VW Bug with camper.

What is a Super Bugger?

A Super Bugger is a VW Bug camper conversion, done by a Costa Mesa camper company back in the 70s. It is a cross between a Beetle and an RV, truly an eye-catching vehicle.

The VW Bug campers aren’t nearly as large as an average RV; inside there isn’t space for much other than the seats, some storage, and a small dining area with a two-burner stove and sink. There isn’t room for a bed, but the Super Bugger would be perfect for those happy to sleep under the stars on long road trips. There is enough space to take a tent with you.

Cost of VW Bug camper

Back in the 70s, the VW Bug with camper trailer was sold for $6,000 by the California camper company. Super Buggers get 23 to 25 miles per gallon, and only weigh an extra 250 pounds more than stock vehicles of that time. A camper in good condition could do 50 to 55 miles per hour on the road.

Tiny interior

A fiberglass panel was used to construct a small living space behind the two front seats of the VW Beetle. As we mentioned earlier in this article, there wasn’t enough space for a bed, only some storage, a small dining area, a stove and sink.

However, a handyman could convert the dining area into a bed with a drop-down table mechanism. We’ve seen this design a few times before and it is certainly a good way to get the most out of what little space there is in a Super Bugger.

Roof rack

Due to the small living area, the camper company provided a roof rack with the accompanying ladder to store large items such as the 5th wheel of the Super Bugger.

Bugaroo, Lil’ Bugger and MiniHome are alternative names for the Super Bugger and often also used on the internet.

Conversion kit and plans

Super Buggers are no longer being made, however, you can buy plans for your own VW Bug camper conversion or MiniHome for only $55 at rqriley.com. According to the plans, the camper has two pull-out beds, a stainless steel sink, and a butane stove.
